DeTomaso P72
In 2014, the De Tomaso brand was taken over by Ideal Ventures, a company based in Hong Kong, which had also purchased the German car manufacturer Gumpert. With new leadership, efforts began to breathe life back into the brand after a previous unsuccessful attempt in 2009. Following a marketing campaign that highlighted the company's legacy and featured teaser videos of the new vehicle, known as 'Project P', the brand unveiled its latest sports car at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. This new model, named the P72, boasts a carbon fibre monocoque chassis built to LMP1 specifications and draws inspiration from the Apollo Intensa Emozione. However, unlike the Intensa Emozione, the P72 is designed to be a grand tourer.
Created by Jowyn Wong from Wyn Design, the exterior draws inspiration from the P70 racing car and the Le Mans race cars of the 1970s, blending contemporary features with a timeless silhouette. The cabin boasts diamond-stitched leather upholstery and luxurious instrumentation with gleaming copper accents. It features an open linkage gearshift lever in copper, complementing the manual transmission. Additionally, the interior showcases a blend of circular analogue and digital gauges, reminiscent of car interiors from the 1960s and 1970s. Additionally, it boasts a top-mounted exhaust system.
In October 2019, De Tomaso announced that the P72 would be powered by a 5.0-litre supercharged Ford Coyote V8 engine, equipped with a Roots-type supercharger from the American tuning firm Roush Performance. This engine is the product of a technical partnership between the two companies and is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, delivering an impressive 750 HP and 900 Nm of torque.
